I'm looking at getting a first gen new beetle for teen daughter and was wondering what common issues they have and milage they show up at.

Electrical systems seem to be a weak spot. I have to clean some corrosion on the primary power and headlight circuit wires and connectors over the years.
No major component failures, but run synthetic oil only in the turbos

Electrics can be tricky. Ours locked on it's own frequently. We always took key out even if leaving the car for a minute.
Used some oil, but got a ton of miles of of her.

I think with most cars over 10 years old it's much more relevant to look at the maintenance history than 'trends',especially on Internet fora, which bias to failures
