Camper

Post by vwbusfan »

I owned a 1976 camper. Great vehicle for traveling through the back roads of New England. I had an issue with it going through the mountains as it the engine would lose power at higher altitudes and then run fine closer to sea level. I never knew what the issue was. I finally sold the vehicle for a replacement that had heat.

To quote an old West Country saying in the UK. If you're stuck behind a line of slow moving traffic the vehicle at the front will be a VW camper.

The thing about the old air cooled engines is that they must be adjusted at higher altitudes.
When you climb in elevation the air gets thinner and the fuel air ratio changes.

You literally have have to turn the fuel ratio screw in order to set the fuel air ratio for higher altitudes.
Then when you go back to sea level you have to do it again!

The real complication arises when you have a dual carb and need the little tube tool to set them together.
