How is it possibile to change trany oil on an o3 Jetta

My wife's 03 2lt Jetta is taking a second or two to have the trany engage when it -1 or less,
then it thumps into gear from first into second.it is ok once it is warmed up.
She has 121000 k on it now,so and oil change or what?
