Volkswagen is getting together a special version of its Tiguan crossover vehicle ready for the Detroit Motor Show. It’s a beefed up hybrid version of the production Tiguan, which has a lot of people excited. Word is that the features off this concept will make it into production-level vehicles at some point in 2016.
These are the more significant features on the concept:
- Large off-road tires
- Off-road protection aluminum panels on the underside of the front and rear bumpers
- Nearly 2 inches in ride height clearance
- Rugged cladding
- Modified hybrid powertrain based on the Golf GTE
- Independent front and rear axle drive or same-time four wheel drive
- 218bhp
- 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds
- 9.2 inch touchscreen interface
- Gesture controls
- 100% digital instrument panel
- Heads up panel display
Apparently this Tiguan can run on electric power alone, but only for about twenty miles. It is designed for (and i quote) “extreme off-road use” – which is a good sign we might be talking about a new classic.
European markets will be the first to get the base Tiguan and it appears that many of the features on the concept car will be making into production, perhaps at launch.
