Volkswagen-based Three-Time World Rally Champions Looking to New Season

Volkswagen is the titleholder of three straight World Rally Championship (WRC) titles, which gives enthusiasts plenty to look to. The most recent title was won down in Australia by the three-time championship driving duo of Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia, and it also gave Volkswagen the coveted Manufacturer’s title. The team piloted the Polo R WRC rally car, winner of 31 out of 36 races since the model returned to rally competition in 2013.

Any way you cut it that is pretty dominating. The Polo is a supermini vehicle that has been in production for 40 years and is available throughout Europe and other markets. The Volkswagen Polo won the 2010 World Car of the Year on its last platform. For 2015, the car was updated with the Mk6 Polo GTI. The 2015 Polo R WRC features the body of the recently updated Polo subcompact, however it retains the running gear that made the 2013 and 2014 WRC campaigns successful. A turbocharged 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine produces 318 horsepower and a paddle shift gearbox transfers power to all four wheels.
