Feel The Power: Volkswagen Going Electric

electric-sparksThe yearly Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is where the latest technology emerges before the public. Auto giant Volkswagen plans on going electric in a big way at this upcoming January’s show by announcing a new all-electric vehicle. Electric vehicles figure to be a big part of the company’s future as it sets to distance itself from the diesel emissions scandal that hit the news and affected sales this year. While the company just reported that the statistics that were first reported were way off, the path towards electric has already been set.

The development is a departure from the company’s long-held mission of sharing the fuel efficiency and environment advantages of its turbocharged diesel injection engines. The company will roll out an all-electric concept car at the show. Heralding the announcement of this technology, Dr. Herbert Diess, the chairman of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, will deliver a keynote address.

The move comes on the heels of announcements by Porsche AG and Audi for electric cars of their own. Both companies are owned by Volkswagen. Porsche announced just a week ago that it was producing a first of its kind all-electric four-door sports car slated for release in 2020. Featuring more than 600 horses and sporting a 310-mile operating range, the vehicle will be different than anything on the road. There are less details about Audi’s entrant into the market, but company representatives have stated that by the year 2025, at least 25 percent of the vehicles they sell in the United States will have a plug.
